What is the best way to tell stories to kids?
Here’s how to tell them stories that engage them. First start with narrating the story to capture their interest, choose a simple story yet meaningful, like the story of Nuh or the prophet stories. But before you narrate the story you should first read it a couple of times by yourself to be familiar with it. Change your tone of voice depending on the scene and characters to make it more realistic to them. Let the kids interrupt you whenever they have a comment or want to ask about something they don’t understand or to say their opinion in the story so far. For example, you could tell them the story of the boy that kept pretending he was drowning until the people didn't believe him anymore, and when he was drowning for real no one went to help him. Then ask them what they think of his behavior, why did people lose their trust in him and what did they learn from the story. When they share their thoughts, they will learn to listen and Respect each other opinions. Use visuals while telling the story, kids love pictures more and it helps them to understand even if the story is to complex, using simple and clear pictures will help. One last thing is Participation, keep the kids active along with the story, for example, make them jump or laugh like the characters, and ask if one of them wants to join with you and act as one of the characters. You could ask them to act out the whole story once you finish it. If you don’t know what to read to them you could tell them about the Muhammad history, or Quran stories to teach them about Islam in a fun way.
How to tell a good children's story?
Here are a few tips to help you in the storytelling journey. If you’re going to tell them about an imaginary world you could connect it with the real world through portals like mirrors or tunnels like Alice in wonderland. When you start the story with this it will catch their interest and make them eager to know what happens next, take the story to a whole new level and make it full of adventures, wonders, and magic. Add up some Conflict that the characters have to find a solution for. For example, when the main character went to the other world she was faced with a whole new world that she knows nothing about and everything looks different from her own world and she doesn’t know how to get back home so she have to go through the adventure to find out where she is and how to get back to the real world. Make the main character struggles to find the way out, for example, make her lose hope in finding the way out to the real world. She feels like she did all she can do and still trapped in this strange world and when she was about to give up something happens and change everything. Also, add fun details don’ make it all a sad story. Describe what the other world looks like for example the houses are made of candies, instead of water there are rivers of chocolate, and there are talking animals and trees. Use your imagination, and let the kids participate and help you build the imagination world. Then comes the time to resolve the conflict, and help the character to find her way back home. Perhaps through the magic portal or a talking animal that can do magic or knows how to get her home.
How to tell stories to babies?
Storytelling is a great way to connect with babies and to teach them life lessons. Makeup stories to teach them what is right from wrong, what is good and what is bad. This is how they learn instead of just telling them don’t do this it’s bad behavior because they won’t listen or even understand why you’re screaming at them. Use stories to teach kids how to be kind and help people, to be modest, and love each other. We all learned a lot from stories, so use the same tool with your kids or babies. Now don’t forget those tips:
- Choose stories that are suitable to their age and interesting to them.
- Make the first scene exciting.
- Narrate the story in a simple and easy way for them to understand.
- Use body language and facial expressions to engage them.
- Read them stories that have a lesson and moral values, like the greedy story.
- Change your voice tone from one character to another.
- Ask them questions to keep them engaged and active.
Start the story by saying “Once Upon a Time” and describe the hero of the story for example the hero is a talking rabbit and when making up the story try to answer the following questions:
- What does the rabbit see, smell, wear, sing, or eat for lunch?
- How does the sun feel on his face?
- How do the flowers smell? Is he happy, sad, curious, or silly?
- What does he see on her walk home from school?
Telling your baby all the details will interest them and make them wonder, what will happen next? Now it’s time to add the lesson you want to teach your baby like being kind, lying is a bad habit, so introduce the problem you want the character to struggle to resolve it. For example, the little rabbit lied to his friend. And answer the following questions.
- Why did he do it?
- How did his friend feel about it?
- What did his friend say or do?
- What did the little rabbit finally do that made his friend happy?
Now what the kids love the most, the “Happily Ever After”, finishes the story with a happy ending, and solves the problem.
