When a certain species of animal goes extinct, it becomes impossible to find it anywhere on planet earth. Dinosaurs are an example of a well-known earthly extinction. Another is the baiji river dolphin that went extinct a few short years ago in China. There are also several domesticated animals that have become endangered to a large extent. "بيجي" الذي انقرض منذ سنوات قلائل في الصين. وهناك الكثير أيضاً من الحيوانات المألوفة التي أصبحت "مهددة بالانقراض إلى حد كبير" ونخشى أن يأتي عليها الدور فى الانقراض. وفي هذا الكتاب نستعرض حوالي 250 نوعاً من تلك الحيوانات المنقرضة، كل في إطار الفترة الجيولوجية التى ينتمي إليها. هناك مايزيد على مليون جنس حيواني في عالمنا اليوم، لكن أكثر من 800 جنس منها انقرض خلال الخمسمائة عام الماضية فقط. إن الانقراض عملية طبيعية، لكن العلماء يخبروننا أن المعدل الذي تنقرض به الحيوانات أصبح أسرع بألف مرة من المعدل الطبيعي .. وهذا بسبب الإنسان!
