Tajweed for Adults
By Madinah Media
Introduction to the Concise Tajweed Book for Adults
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, who revealed the Noble Qur’an as guidance for humanity and a clarification for all things. He made it easy to recite, memorize, and understand. He elevated its status and perfected its explanation. Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, has guaranteed its preservation, so falsehood cannot touch from any angle. As He, the Most High, says:
“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’an, and indeed, We will be its guardian.”
(Al-Hijr: 9)
And may peace and blessings be upon our illiterate Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the final messenger. He passed on the message, fulfilled the trust, and taught us to read the Qur’an with Tajweed. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Adorn the Qur’an with your voices.”
(Authentic Hadith)
He also told us about the reward of reading the Qur’an:
“Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah will receive one good deed for it, and each good deed is worth ten times more.”
(Authentic Hadith)
About This Book
We are pleased to present this concise educational book about the science of Tajweed — the rules for reading the Qur’an the correct way, just as it was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ. Tajweed ensures that letters are pronounced from their correct articulation points (Makharij al-Ḥuruf) and with their proper characteristics (Sifat al-Ḥuruf), so the reader can recite the Qur’an clearly, correctly, and avoid common mistakes.
This book explains many important topics. It starts with basic ideas and slowly moves to practical reading skills. It includes:
• The virtues of reciting the Qur’an.
• Practical steps for memorizing the Qur’an.
• The manners (etiquettes) of reciting the Qur’an.
• The rules of Isti‘ādhah and Basmalah, the levels of recitation, and types of mistakes.
• The articulation points (Makharij) of the Arabic alphabet—in the mouth, throat, tongue, lips, and nasal passage.
• The rules of Nūn Sākinah and Tanwīn, Qalqalah, and Nūn and Mīm Mushaddadah.
• The rules for the silent Mīm and silent Lām in nouns, verbs, and particles.
• Types of Madd: original (ṭabī‘ī) and secondary (far‘ī), and the causes of each.
• Ṣifāt al-Ḥurūf with a focus on light and heavy letters.
• The rules of Hamzat al-Waṣl and Hamzat al-Qaṭ‘, as well as guidelines for stopping and starting recitation.
• The open and closed Tā’, and the rules of Tā’.
• Special words written with connected or disconnected Tā’, and vocabulary specific to the Ḥafṣ narration.
This book is written in simple and clear language, using a step-by-step approach that starts with basic lessons and moves gradually to more advanced skills. Each lesson includes examples from the Qur’an and practical exercises to help you understand and improve your recitation. The goal is to help you read the Qur’an better, develop your voice, and build a strong connection with the Book of Allah through both memorization and reflection.
We ask Allah to grant us sincerity and to accept this work. We also ask Him to make it a method for honoring the Qur’an, to help us recite it with proper Tajweed, and to guide us to live by its teachings.
